2022-2023 WIMA Admissions Information

The WIMA application for Middle School is closed for the 2022-2023 school year due to the number of students currently on the waiting list.

Please check back mid- November of 2022 to apply for the 2023-2024 school year!

Application Information

The 2022-2023 application will open on: Friday, November 19th at 9am. 

It will close on: Sunday, February 27th at midnight, to be included in the lottery. 

Any applications received after this deadline will not be included in the lottery, but added to our waiting list. The application is completely online.  No in person or paper application will be available. 

Lottery Results will be emailed Wednesday, April 13th by 8pm

All families will need to have a completed discipline form to attach to their application. Click the file below to download the form and provide to your student's current school. Once the form is completed by your school, the school should hand it back to you to upload to the application.

Who Can Apply?

WIMA is a public, International Baccalaureate Middle School serving students in Washtenaw, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, and Wayne counties. Priority is given to 5th grade YIES students, siblings, Ypsilanti District Families and Washtenaw County residents.   Total number of students per grade: 64 Any additional questions, please email Enrollment Manager, Kelly Cartwright at KCartwright@wihi.org.

Step 1: Complete Online Application:

The online application must have current school year grades and a completed discipline form from current school.  The discipline form can be found on the application.

Step 2: Student Support Documents:

To help eliminate in person meetings, all required documents must be attached to the application. 

Families will be prompted to attach these documents as they complete the application with a jpeg or pdf file only.  Families who do not have all their documents ready when they are completing their application can save their progress and come back to finish it later.

Step 3: Student placement testing:

While testing is important and students should try their best, placement testing does not determine acceptance.  Placement tests helps us determine class placement and if any summer and/or school support is required prior to attending.   

The placement testing dates for incoming WIMA students will be in March.  

All students applying for WIMA are required to complete placement testing.  

WIMA Students will be tested on Math, Reading and Writing.  All students are given 3 hrs to complete their testing, though most students complete the test well before the time limit.  

Students who may need additional accommodations, must include a copy of their IEP or 504 plan on the application.  We will contact those families a week before their testing date to confirm accommodations. 

Once all three steps have been completed, students will have a complete application and will then be entered into our lottery system.  

Current YIES students, WIMA/WIHI siblings and WEOC Employees are given priority placement when applying to WIHI and/or WIMA, as long as the application is received by the deadline. 

Lottery results will be emailed to families in April and families will have 48hrs to accept or decline their spot.  If a family does not respond via email within 48hrs or declines their seat, that student will be dropped and we will move on to the next student on the waitlist.  This will continue until all spots have been filled, up to the first week of October.

Families will receive email updates throughout the process, after the lottery takes place, to help keep families informed and supported through the application and enrollment process.

How many students do you accept to WIMA?

• We can accept up to 64 students for 6th grade, with priority given to YIES students (if applied by the deadline), siblings (per State Law) & children of staff members (per WEOC contract).
• After that, it then goes to families who live in the Ypsilanti District and then to anyone who lives outside of the Ypsilanti

How many students do you accept for 7th & 8th grade?

• We fill spots as they become available.  Some years we have 1 spot open, while others we have 10 spots open.  It just depends.  Sibling priority is given, just like 6th grade students, when applying to 7th & 8th grade.

What does OOC and SOC stand for?

• OOC = ​Out of County - This refers to any applicant that lives outside of Washtenaw County or in Dexter.  Out of County residents can only be accepted into WIMA  through the School of Choice program. 
• SOC = School of Choice -  This is an application program which allows students to attend WIMA through a participating Washtenaw County School, which the Ypsilanti District.  Approval is needed from the Ypsilanti district, in order for a student's conditional acceptance to WIMA be granted.  Any student who lives outside of the Ypsilanti District, is required to complete a School of Choice application.  The SOC application, is linked within our Program Application.
• School of Choice affects where your student can participate in sports.  All students attending WIMA can participate in any sport the Ypsilanti Middle School Offers.  WIMA offers a wide variety of extra curricular activities (located on the Clubs page) that are available to all students regardless of their home district.

Do I need to register my child with the Ypsilanti middle school if we want to attend WIMA?​

• Currently, the YCS district is not requiring families to register with them as well, when registering for WIMA. However, if that changes, we will be sure to let all families know and how to do that. ​
